Sri Dalada Maligawa
Rich with history and importance, this golden-roofed Temple of the Sacred Tooth is located north of the Kandy Lake. History tells the story of how Buddha’s tooth was smuggled to Sri Lanka and enshrined at the 17th-century temple.
The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage
Dating back to 1975, The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage has the largest herd of captive elephants in the world. An ambience simulating a natural habitat is present where the elephants are taken care of. Expect to view the incredible spectacle of elephants bathing.
Peradeniya Botanical Garden
Located less than 6 kms west of the Kandy city, this has become an attraction that was established in 1843. Discover more than 4,000 species of plants, including orchids, spices, medicinal plants and palm trees are cultivated here. A stroll through the verdant gardens of this Eden is highly advised.
Gadaladeniya Temple
Built in 1344, this temple is located on a small hilltop and is famous for its beautiful stone carvings. A South Indian design ethos is present since it was designed by an Indian architect known as Ganesvarachari.
Ambakke Viharaya
Known as Embekka Devalaya, the temple is an example that shows a medieval style of architecture adopted in Sri Lanka. Expect to be enthralled by a fine collection of wood carvings like that of the mother and child carving at the entrance.
Lankatilaka Temple
Placed just 5 kms away from the Gadaladeniya Temple, visitors will find an ancient temple that’s divided into two halves. One half is Buddhist while the other is Hindu. Expect to view some intrinsic work featuring a Buddha image, Kandy-period paintings, rockface inscriptions and stone elephant figures.
